Exlibrary markings. Hinges sound, binding shaken. Pages clean, tanned. Paper over boards is heavily worn, expecially at spine. Joints between spine and boards are split. Paper over spine is torn with wear to extremities. Joints had been repaired with tape at one time, but the adhesive has dried and the tape has fallen off. White adhesive remnants on front, back, and spine. Interior is in good condition; rebinding would benefit this imporant volume. This edition had 750 copies. Includes notes for lectures, anti-slavery notes, the eighteenth presidency, introductions intended for American editions of "Leaves of Grass," introduction to the London edition, manuscript "to the foreign reader." Appendix is a variant manuscript of introductions intended for the American editions of Leaves of Grass, and oriiginal draft of poem, "A Starry Midnight." Notes. Ex-Library; 10.75" tall; 265 pages.
