Volume is complete and in one piece with hinges and binding sound. However, there is extensive water damage to the boards, which are bowed and warped, and to the cloth over the boards, which have heavy wear besides. Leather spine is missing except for small area showing book title. Pages are warped with dampstaining, foxing, and tanning, but the text is complete and readable. In the book's favor, there is no musty smell, nor evidence of mildew or mold despite the water damage. Important early biography of David Stewart Caldwell (1725–1824), Presbyterian minister, educator, physician, statesman, and early settler in Guilford County, North Carolina. 9.0" tall; 304 pages.
