1860 printing. Cover is embossed brown cloth, with bumped and worn corners and general light wear and soiling. Top and bottom of spine are worn. Gilt lettering on spine is visible but faded. Cloth beginning to tear where front cover joins spine at bottom. Endpapers yellow, former owner's name inside front . Pages foxed throughout. Hinges still very tight, binding firm. Nice example of domestic sentimental Victorian poetry about the virtuous woman. Inspired by his wife Emily, author Coventry Patmore (1823-1896) reportedly wrote "The Angel in the House" about her. He published the work in two installments. "The Betrothal" was part of the first installment, originally published in Britain in 1854 (here, in 1860 U.S. publication). The book focuses entirely on the story of Felix and Honoria. Written in the voice of Felix, a young poet, this half of the Angel is structured essentially as a long narrative poem that follows Felix's courtship with his love, Honoria, and ends with the two lovers' marriage. The poetry and ideas in Patmore's work eventually became powerfully influential in reinforcing the Victorian ideal of marriage and wifehood.
