Wannamaker was a professor of literature at Trinity College, Durham, NC, then served as Dean of Trinity College 1917-1928 during its evolution into Duke University. He also served as the University's first academic vice president, 1928-1948. As such, he stands as one of the important leaders of U.S. higher education in the first half of the 20th century.
