We're in the middle of the holiday season, and winter approaches. Days grow short, nights descend dark and cold. Here in North Carolina, the trees have lost their leaves after an unseasonal windstorm. Gardens are put to bed for the winter, although as I look out the window I see one last rose abloom in the far corner of the garden.

It's a time of thought. Thought that for some becomes somber as sunlight weakens. Thought that for others becomes mystical reflection on the miracle of promise, renewal and hope.

We have had our first winter cold spell here. The cats curl sleepily, purring, indoors; Annie the dog finds crisp, sub-freezing air energizing, and her tail curls more decisively this week as she sniffs the air. A change of seasons has settled on us here, without a doubt.
